Mr. Dave Balter is an Investment Advisor at dunnhumby Ventures. Mr. Balter founded the firm and previously served as the Global Head of Investments and Venture Advisor. He is Co-founder, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Smarterer, Inc. He co-founded Smarterer Inc. in 2010. He served on the Global Executive Team. Mr. Balter is a Venture Partner at Boston Seed Capital LLC. He is a mentor with Tech Stars. He is an Investor and Advisor to dozens of startups including FitnessKeeper, Promoboxx, Relay Rides, eLaCarte, ProctorCam, and HelpScout. Mr. Balter served as the Global Head of Investments at dunnhumby Limited. In addition to his operating experience, he has experience as an active angel who has worked with some exceptional talent and start-ups to Boston Seed Capital.
Mr. Balter founded BzzAgent Inc. in 2001 and served as its Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman. He served as the President of BzzAgent Inc. until June 2009. Mr. Balter has worked a number of years working for a variety of corporations, including Kessler Financial Services, where he managed direct marketing and affinity program implementations for Fortune 1000 clients, and Webb & Co., where he analyzed circulation and fulfillment operations, and performed statistical modeling for consumer catalogs. Mr. Balter serves as on Executive Council and Director of Word of Mouth Marketing Association. He serves as Director of Massachusetts Innovation and Technology Exchange. Mr. Balter serves on the Advisory Boards of the Wharton Future of Advertising Project, Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange, Mass Technology Leadership Council, Social Media Advisory Council, FitnessKeeper, and Crowdsprout.
He serves as a Co-Chairman of WOMMA's Ethics Council. He lectures around the world on trends in word of mouth and social media. Mr. Balter is an innovation-obsessed builder of companies often as a Founder/ Chief Executive Officer but occasionally as a Board Member, advisor or investor. He has over ten years’ experience in marketing, previously founding and running two promotional marketing agencies, the most recent being sold in October 2001. He has experience as an active angel who has worked with some exceptional talent and start-ups. He was named to the '40 under 40' by the Advertising Specialty Institute in 2001, and 'Top 7 individuals changing the face of beauty' by Women's Wear Daily in 2004. In 2007, Harvard University dubbed him one of Boston’s “Hottest Technology CEOs.” He holds a provisional patent in the process and systems of Word-of-Mouth marketing and research. He is a frequent speaker to corporations and universities on the subject of Word-of-Mouth and non-traditional media. Mr. Balter is an Author of two books on the subject, Grapevine and The Word of Mouth Manual: Volume II. Mr. Balter holds a B.A. in Psychology from Skidmore College.
