I’ve been a big fan of Dan Zarrella for some time now. He does a lot of great work for HubSpot as their social scientist. KISSmetrics used Dan’s data to create a nice infographic.
Peak hours for attracting click-throughs are 6am, 11am, 5pm and 7pm (read: before breakfast, before lunch, before dinner and after dinner):
Facebook wasn’t left out of the data. Sharing peaks at around noon.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that content is king, I’d be knee-deep. Guidance on what content connects with which consumers in what place has been lacking.
The folks over at the Content Marketing Institute recently released their second version of The Content Grid.
You’ll see that it is organized by the stage of knowledge and interest a potential customer has against their closeness to purchase.
How to use this: Take an inventory of what you are currently doing. Compare it to the chart and see if you are missing any content opportunities.

Are you striving to be more nimble like all the cool kids at startups? Many have posited that agencies should shift their practices to be more like the startups. But this pits two models against each other.
Agencies are service focused. Startups are product focused.
Agencies have high turnover. Startups hold onto their employees.
The last point is where the true difference is. Corporate memory is an employee’s knowledge of the company, their work and their coworkers. This is much more critical to startups and very difficult to foster at agencies.

Does the non-Facebook internet feel about 9% less interesting than it did a year ago? That’s how much usage has fallen. In the same time period, time spent on Facebook has climbed nearly 70% year over year.
So if everyone’s a publisher…
For years, trends have pushed brands toward becoming publishers. The advantages are a more captive and engaged audience. However, this data suggests the increasing importance of not just being a publisher, but being a Facebook-able publisher.
To get into newsfeeds, to be shared, to garner comments, Likes and recommendations, your content must be tuned to social.

Non-profits are great. (Full disclosure: WOMMA is a non-profit). Goals other than profit can drive some really creative and talkable ads.
Cramer-Krasselt and COA Youth & Family Centers developed a series of clever billboards that encourage parent-child interactions. The goal is to encourage parental involvement in childhood education.
What I really like about this campaign is that it’s goal is to start conversations. And this tactic doesn’t need to be reserved for non-profits. In 2010, Cottonelle did the same with an ad campaign that stirred the debate about using tissue roles over or under.
Key Takeaway: Ads tend to show messages geared directly toward purchase. Those that point toward a conversation stand out more and, well, start a conversation.

Have you seen QR codes on everything lately? Advertisers have latched onto these. They are inexpensive, easy to generate and highly trackable. And they’re pretty old having been developed in 1994. Increased smartphone usage has brought user technology to the point where QR codes now make sense.
But it may take a while before the masses are clamoring for more QR codes. Forrester research found that only 5% of smartphone owners have scanned a QR code.

Lucid Agency put out a great infographic examining the ongoing mobile market share war. This data is critical to anyone thinking about going mobile. If you plan on developing an app, choosing the right mobile operating system is a very important decision.
Increasingly, consumers are using mobile devices to live their lives and learn about the world. The cited research predicts a near tripling of Android users in the next four years while all other providers continue to grow, save for Symbian.
