Many tech and marketing wonks have been drooling over augmented reality (AR) for a while, but have lacked the widespread tools to make it worth while. Samsung will soon release (Oct. 16) an iPad competing product that actually advertises its augmented reality capabilities. In fact, it’s the second feature promoted in their ad.
This is a big step for AR. Once the general public has access to and awareness of AR-ready products, marketers can finally begin to truly experiment with its capabilities.

This is a big step for AR, especially as I’m sure the iPad will offer this feature set soon (if they’re not already). What’s interesting, however, is that most AR folks see people wearing AR enabled glasses or (I kid you not) contact lenses versus using our mobile devices. This hands-free feature of AR will be a big deal and multiple companies around the globe have these glasses products out already (including Nokia, for instance).
In terms of AR, as a governing WOMMA member and AR enthusiast, I’d greatly appreciate any WOMMA member (or reader) taking an Augmented Reality survey I’ve created for the Society for New Communications Research (SNCR). My goal is to increase AR usage and help the industry while also alerting the general public as to the privacy issues surrounding the technology as well.
