  • New Study: Millennials Value Ideas

Pat McCarthy 11:37 am on May 28, 2010 | 0 Comments Permalink | Post Your Comment!

A recent study by WOMMA governing member Mr Youth found that Millennials, people born 1979-1995, have some different views on what garners respect and interest. Experience and titles have fallen to ideas and inspiration. Business-as-usual mentalities don’t keep interest because they stifle new ideas.

For word of mouth marketing, this shows that the Millennial generation craves fresh new takes on old practices. To do this, find the basic elements of your brand and see how you can make a change that stays true to your base while offering something new. Maintaining a dynamic image where there is always something fresh to talk about will help keep your brand talkable.

The Yankees, love them or hate them, have essentially banned iPads from their stadium. Don’t ask my why. But one teams policy is another’s opportunity.

The Hudson Valley Renegades, a minor league team, decided to host iPad Mondays. Fans get in for free when they bring their iPad. This is a great example of how to create a talkable buzz that also converts on participation. Not only do they get dozens if not hundreds of happy patrons in the stadium, but they also offer iPad training at the “ReTweet booth.”

Key Takeaway: Even a Goliath can have a chink in the armor. Take advantage of your competitor’s mistakes no matter what their size.

Jim Lecinski, Managing Director of US Sales for Google, presented the final Keynote at School of WOM yesterday. He outlined how Google sees and plans for four different types of WOM.

These four stem from a two by two chart with good and bad as the columns and expected and unexpected as the rows. For instance, their recent interactive Pacman logo was good and unexpected for the user. The unexpected part coupled with the good led to a surge of WOM that in four short days resulted in a Facebook fan group with over 1 million members.

Like the Pacman example, all of Google’s marketing efforts base themselves in user participation. By giving people an experience, they then are equipped with a shareable story.

  • School of WOM Closing Notes

We wrapped up School of WOM yesterday. Before finally closing the door, I felt it necessary to highlight a few key takeaways that the conference centered on.

    1. Hello Customer - No matter who was speaking, the customer was front and center. This is no mistake. We tend to get wrapped up in the tools and forget that the customer is the person spreading WOM. Creating a talkable experience is key to generating WOM. In the end, a customer is a human just like everyone at a company. WOM stems from making every business interaction also a human interaction.

    2. WOM as a Business Solution - WOM doesn’t just solve the marketing department’s problems. Customer service, internal communications and product development all have WOM solutions. It could be as simple as holding a contest to name a product like Kodak did when naming the Koday Play Sport. When looking at the latest problem in your workplace, think about how you could involve the customer or different departments in the solution. The results may surprise you.

    3. Get Scientific - Why do people talk about brands? Steve Knox answered this question by delving into behavioral psychology. When our expectations are interrupted, we have something to talk about. Brands need to find what is expected of them and push the envelope a little bit. If you don’t, your consumer won’t have anything new to say about you.
