Australia’s tourism industry draws a cool $89 billion into the island nation every year. Previous innovative attempts to promote their country have failed. Some of you might remember the “So where the bloody hell are you?” campaign that got banned on UK and Canadian TV. Now Tourism Australia is encouraging citizens to submit photos and descriptions of their favorite Aussie spots. Instead of relying on a 30 second ad that must contain applicable and accepted content worldwide, they are now relying on their most enthusiastic citizens. This is a great step for crowdsourcing. After a bad experience with a risqué ad, Tourism Australia naturally needed a more reliable method. Crowdsourcing to the rescue.

    creative-mind

One of the reasons I love WOM marketing is how I can expect to see a constant stream of extremely creative ideas. As one breakthrough idea gets mainstreamed through repetition, others pop up. Keeping this up requires hundreds, perhaps thousands of creative minds churning out new ideas. I’m sure many of you would agree that the next big idea is often very hard to develop. In the cited article, Robbin Phillips of Brains on Fire uses a TED Talk from Elizabeth Gilbert to highlight how important it is to nurture the creative process. Business methods and creativity can coexist very well. You just need to know how to cultivate it. As WOM marketers, we need to create an environment where creativity can thrive among goals, deadlines and quarterly reports. Or as Geno Church puts it “Our job is to create a dance floor of insight and inspiration.”

  • Really Bad Customer Service

Sometimes to know exactly what not to do, you need a good hard example. Best of all, you can test this yourself! A reader of WOMMA member Quicken Loans’ blog What’s the DIFF? sent in an email exchange that defines terrible customer service. The customer had bought some Steve Madden boots and one month latter found the heals were fraying and coming apart. She sent an email to the customer service department and clearly stated the problem. In response, she got an autogen email that stated their return policy and also encouraged her to contact the store she bought them. So our boot troubled friend sent another email and received another autogen email. Again, she was redirected to other people, other departments, and in the end, her issue remained unsolved. Each of these emails was sent by a “100% Customer Satisfaction Team Member.” So this is my call to you. Email info@stevemaddendirect.com and let us know how they respond.

  • Start with Customer Success

Yesterday we ran a interview we did with WOMMA Founder & President Emeritus Andy Sernovitz. He emphasized the business end of why customer service is key to generating word of mouth. Today I found an article authored by Lumension’s Cindy Kim that advised defining a customer success program as the first step towards becoming a WOM company. Their very detailed 5 step process then ends with “Market the Customer’s Success Through Integrated Approach.” [Aside: can you tell Lumension is a IT company?] They start with the customer and end with the customer. In the middle they have utilization of Web 2.0 tools. I love how they start and finish with the customer. As many have lamented before, brands often get so caught up in the whirlwind of fancy tools that they forget the actual people conveying the message. Here we see another step in the right direction.

  • A Tale of Two Burgers

We may be living in the best of times for small businesses with good products and savvy marketing minds. In Milwaukee, the denizens know a good burger when they taste one. Two burger joints, AJ Bombers and Sobelman’s, are known to sell a solid sandwich. AJ Bombers, however, is only one year old compared to Sobelman’s decade of operation, yet is equally successful. How? Start with a good product then move to the customer. They have utilized social media, FourSquare in particular, to enhance customer satisfaction. For instance, new Mayors get a free burger and fries. This and other tactics to not only connect with but also engage their audience has built them into a city staple in one tenth of the time their competitors needed.
