We have seen passion trump power many times in word of mouth marketing. Rounding up this year, music lovers who hate the pop stars churned out by the UK-based talent show X Factor propelled Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name” from the early 90’s to #1 on the UK pop-charts. Simon Cowell, the infamous pop guru, at first called the campaign stupid. When the duo behind the campaign managed to best him through word of mouth without any funding, Cowell was forced to swallow his words and actually offered them a job. Coming from him, that is quite the compliment. It also reinforces one of the fundamental truths about WOM. Passion is what gets people talking. One good idea to spark that passion can ignite a firestorm.

David Corkindale of the University of South Australia sent a great response to Dec. 16’s article that asked about psychology papers regarding WOM. He offered up four papers from psych journals examining WOM and promised to look for more. If you need some in depth reading for the WOMMA Word’s winter break next week, spend some time with these:

On November 12 and 13, the FDA held formal hearings into the application of social media platforms to drug and medical device advertising. WOMMA’s General Council, Tony DiResta, attended the hearings and wrote a great summary. We need to know what you think about healthcare and pharma companies using social media. Be part of the solution – participate, advocate and get involved. WOMMA will be submitting Comments to the FDA, which are due on February 28, 2010. The comment period will close on January 31, 2010.

Even the most savvy search minds aren’t entirely sure how the integration of Twitter into Google and Bing will affect search results. One thing is for sure, any brand that doesn’t have some sort of Twitter plan should seriously consider making the jump. In terms of SEO, the names that have dominated many search terms may see their link drop down based on the chatter on Twitter. This means moving beyond listening and actively participating. Despite seemingly having their hand forced, many brands may look back on this as the move that finally got them engaged with their consumers.

With up to 20% of website traffic arriving via links, brand managers now need to think about how their content is influencing their influencers. This may seem like herding cats. Unlike cattle, to keep with this metaphor, cats go where they want, to food, warm laps, and catnip. Brand managers who give the consumer what they want will see measurable returns. So what do they want? Engagement, respect and less billboards. The marketing landscape has changed. Bought media can’t hold a light next to earned media. Engaging the consumer will earn media that can’t be bought, only built.
