  • Break Down the Corporate Social Media Barriers

For many of the big wigs out there, social media seems like just another way for customers to voice their complaints, a digitized helpline if you will. That viewpoint won’t inspire much excitement or a serious investment. But maybe the subject isn’t correctly marketed to the higher-ups. Since social media provides so much more than consumer complaint letters or data from helplines, it has to be marketed as a two way network. It gives the consumer a voice and lets them hear yours.

  • Call for Comments - Tell us what you think about The WOM Metics & Guidebook

The promise of word of mouth (WOM) marketing initiatives has practically saturated the consciousness of every brand marketer: relevant, more targeted reach leading to more efficient use of marketing dollars, a virtual focus group providing commentary about a company’s products and services, opportunities for engaging customers in greater dialogue, just to name a few. But one important barrier to adopting WOM marketing more broadly has been a lack of understanding about what, and how, to measure the impact of WOM marketing. We are calling for comments to the draft of the guidebook. There are currently seven chapters written and we’re adding three additional chapters as well as an overall ROI component. As a member of WOMMA, we are calling on you to review the guidebook and submit your comments. The Research & Metrics Council will consolidate all comments and make changes to the guidebook accordingly. The final draft will be released during the Research Symposium & Marketing Summit, Nov. 18-20 at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas.
The last day to comment is July 1st. Don’t miss your opportunity to influence the final draft!

Twitter has solved many of the marketing problems of many small and medium businesses. Often your everyday mom and pop store doesn’t have the time or budget to get out a solid marketing campaign, but microblogging has come to the rescue. For instance, KogiBBQ is a Korean BBQ-Taco blend who’s cart moves all around Los Angeles. He tweets his location changes to his adoring customers. Stories like this have inspired all sorts of business owners to find out how a couple of daily updates can fill their coffers with a nearly 100% ROI.

  • Obama Wins (in Marketing)

The Obama campaign won two grands prix awards from the Cannes Lions International Advertising Awards. The first award was for marketing that is “provocative, challenges assumptions and points to a new direction.” The second was for using at least three or more media that is “high standard and state-of-the-art.” By using traditional outlets such as TV, radio, and door-to-door canvassing combined with new ones like social media and viral marketing, the Obama campaign impressed the judges and attendees. Certainly results don’t hurt either. Other winners produced viral campaigns and other word of mouth marketing.

At the recent Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston, there was a clear divide between the old and new, more specifically social media and traditional structure. Many executives are dubious of the developing corporate acceptance of social media tools. Recent hard times will be a test to many business leaders. Will they embrace social media or retreat to tried and true marketing? Despite the clear successes of many traditional companies, it appears some might still choose the latter.

Twitter has taken the online world by storm in the last few years leaving many asking where it came from and how did it get so big so fast. Well, Twitter went live on July 13, 2006, but it’s seeds were sown in the early 80s when real-time text updates were developed for UNIX. The ball kept rolling as SMS text messaging, blogs, and social networking became mainstream. Before you know it, Shaq and Ashton Kutcher are Twitter darlings. The following graphic shows how all the factors melted into the phenomena known as Twitter.
