According to Google, a recently completed contest from Excedrin represented the first time a pharma company had thrown its hat into the increasingly crowded field of user-generated content contests. Launched in September, the Excedrin Express Gels $15K Speed Challenge asked users to send in videos of themselves performing “an amazing feat of speed.” The contest produced 251 user-generated videos. • Montenegro Introduces Social Media Restrictions

WOMMA Editor 12:17 pm on December 23, 2008 | Comments Off Comments Permalink

A new report from WOMMA member Nielsen Online claims that a majority of online video viewing takes place during business hours on weekdays than just about any time on weekends. Officials in Montenegro, a tiny country located in Southeastern Europe, were probably pleased to hear this, as the stats help justify new social media restrictions set to take place.

  • First Ever Internet Feature Film Debuts in January

WOMMA Editor 12:17 pm on December 23, 2008 | Comments Off Comments Permalink

A feature film created entirely by an Internet community is set to debut in January. The film, called Perkins’ 14, is a horror story about kidnapped children who are dehumanized for evil. Massify, the film production community behind the idea, gave its members control over the film every step of the way, from voting on the initial concept pitches, to picking the cast, and even a contest for the poster.

  • Pizza Hut Video Campaign Goes Viral

WOMMA Editor 12:17 pm on December 23, 2008 | Comments Off Comments Permalink

Pizza Hut’s simple viral video clip seems to have become a weapon of mass affection. With just over 250,000 views on YouTube and MySpace in only 10 days, “Kicked out of a Pizza Place” is one of three videos made to order for the pizza chain. In the video, created by Mediocre Films, a man visits mom-and-pop pizza parlors, has Pizza Hut delivered and is then ejected from the establishment.

WOMMA Editor 12:17 pm on December 23, 2008 | Comments Off Comments Permalink

A year ago Twitter was a relatively small community of techies and web 2.0 geeks, now it has gone mainstream. Hubspot, the developer of Twitter Grader, just released its “State of the Twittersphere” report. The report reveals that an estimated 5-10 thousand new Twitter accounts are opened per day. According to the study, Twitter appears to be most popular in major English-speaking cities. The top 5 Twitter Cities include London, San Francisco, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

  • Lessons from Facebookgate

WOMMA Editor 12:13 pm on December 22, 2008 | Comments Off Comments Permalink

Unethical, seedy, fraudulent — the actions of college guide company College Prowler have been described in more than a few ways by now. If you’re new to the story of Facebookgate, we encourage you to check out Squared Peg, where an investigation of College Prowler’s creation and/or infiltration of 200+ college Facebook groups throughout the country.
Dave Kerpen of WOMMA member the Kbuzz has provided his own thoughts and adjectives about the latest online unethical scandal, and we’d like to highlight not his criticisms, but his suggestions for remedying future situations. Universities and other institutions or higher learning, take note of some of Dave’s key points:
    1) “College institutions had better get way more involved in social media and specifically in Facebook, immediately.”
    2) “There are many colleges that seem to have a Facebook presence, but it’s very unclear as to whether it’s from the college itself or just its students and/or alumni.”
    3) “With a Page, you can communicate with prospective students and parents as well as current students and parents, and alumni- and then you can monitor groups without owning administrative control of them.”

  • Companies Turning to Social Media Marketing

WOMMA Editor 12:13 pm on December 22, 2008 | Comments Off Comments Permalink

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, laptop and PC maker Lenovo gave laptops and digital cameras to 100 athletes. The catch? Lenovo asked them to blog about their experience, and it was a major success.
The athletes published more than a 1,500 posts, about 15 posts per person. When considering the Olympics were not much longer than 2 weeks, that’s almost one post a day per athlete. The fans noticed, responding with over 8,000 comments.
Lenovo isn’t the only company turning to social media to market itself. In this Boston Herald piece, we learn that Red Hat, SAS, and Blue Cross are some of the other major companies turning towards social media. The full piece after the jump.

  • JoePa’s Social Media Birthday

WOMMA Editor 12:13 pm on December 22, 2008 | Comments Off Comments Permalink

Joe Paterno, legendary football coach of Penn State University for 43 years, turned 82 yesterday. He certainly rang in his birthday with friends and family, possible some cake and ice cream, and hopefully, the rest of the usual fare.
But there was also the virtual ice cream party for JoePa, hosted on http://joepabirthday.blogspot.com/. Hosted by WOMMA member Sports Media Challenge, the virtual birthday party was a conglomeration of JoePa shoutouts and birthday wishes, video tributes, and a very entertaining list of the “Top 82 Reasons We Love JoePa.”
Once you’ve checked out JoePa’s online birthday party, we encourage you to check out the behind the scenes reasoning and logistics, the whys and hows of the operation: http://buzzmanager.wordpress.com/2008/12/16/youre-invited-joe-pa-virtual-birthday-party/. All in all, the Virtual Birthday Party was a test run by Sports Media Challenge, an exercise to see how they might bridge college football and social media. And, at that, we view it as a successfully bridged operation.

  • Buzznet

WOMMA Editor 12:13 pm on December 22, 2008 | Comments Off Comments Permalink

Up and coming musicians have a variety of tools at their disposal for social media dispersal; MySpace and the inline audio flash player as a prime example. But we’d like to highlight a pick from MGH WOM: Buzznet.
Buzznet is a great resource because it has shifted the paradigm of musicians’ social media from individual pages to a community atmosphere. Buzznet feels more like an issue of Rolling Stone than it does a site of individual profiles, and you find yourself browsing for concerts or genres, not individual band pages.
MGH WOM has highlited its top 4 features of Buzznet, and we’d like to show these to you:
BUZZ - Buzznet has a social voting feature built into the site. Any piece of content posted by someone on the site can be voted up, or “buzzed”.
Concerts - The concert section of Buzznet lets you search for concerts by your favorite band or location.
Community - The community gives you constant live updates of what is going on at the site.
Buzznet Player - Of course a music community would have an awesome music player.

  • Twitter How-To’s From a [Very Savvy] 10-Year-Old

WOMMA Editor 12:13 pm on December 22, 2008 | Comments Off Comments Permalink

10 year old blogger @gloson of glosonblog.com, is a 10-year-old blogging and tweeting phenom, there can little doubt at that. So when Gloson presents four Twitter mistakes to be avoided, we’re more than willing to pass them along.
    Common Twitter mistakes to avoid:
    1. Pride and Putting yourself First
Think about what you would like to receive before sending a tweet or direct message on twitter. Pride comes before an un-follow.
    2) Not Connecting With People
What do you feel if you talk to someone who doesn’t respond? Unnoticed.
Another way of connecting with people is by answering questions. People will appreciate you and would probably answer your questions in the future.
    3. Auto Responding
Seriously, get rid of those auto responders. Auto responders are impersonal.
    4. Bringing no Value to your Followers
Although you don’t harass or offend our followers, do you think they still want to follow you if you don’t bring any value to them? Do you bring value to your followers? Do you think your followers would like to read your tweets? If you don’t bring any value to your followers, and do not do anything offending, you’re like just between good and bad.
