  Broadband use in the EU tripled to 36 percent of households from 2003 to 2007. Yet, across Europe, as well as America, broadband computer access is hardly ubiquitous. In the same vain, a report appeared in spring of 2008 showing that 40 percent of European citizens do not send emails or know how to use search engines like Google. In Romania, those individuals who lack that technical knowledge number a whopping 69 percent of the population.   The Estee Lauder Company has just announced a major rollout of an online marketing campaign to aid Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Highlights of the campaign include viral content themed around the idea of “Share a Survivor Story, Inspire the World.” To spread its message of awareness, Estee Lauder has teamed up with such companies as Aveda, Clinique, and Darphin to co-host the campaign. Slide, a major social network application publisher, will spread the campaign on Facebook and MySpace.

  The goal of Match.com is, simply, to present yourself to others so that you might be able to meet another. In the United States, most Match users take the seemingly logical step of posting photographs of themselves. Not so in Japan, where fewer than half of Match’s paying users post pictures for others to see — and this Japanese phenomenon is not unique to Match. “Welcome to Japan’s online social scene, where you’re unlikely to meet anyone you don’t know already.”

  In three studies by three university authors, Himanshu Mishra of the University of Utah, Baba Shiv of Stanford, and Dhananjay Nayakankuppam of the University of Iowa, an old adage rang true; ignorance was bliss. In the three studies, the authors’ reviews found that participants were happier when presented only with vagueness and patchy information about a product they just used, as opposed to those who received specificities. Marketers may want to pay attention.
